Bjorn Borg is Pants

We love our a-board.  It adorns the spot outside our little cafe and we like to change the message as often as we feel slightly funny.

Got any good ones about Wimbledon?  We reward the best ones with some cake or free coffee.

So far, we've got:

Salmonroe, Codroe, Macenroe...

Enjoying the rein, deer?

Better service than Sampras

Send any good ones you have to iloveherring@scandikitchen.co.uk or add them as a comment to this post.

Chew gum = be beautiful

The stupidest gum (VIGO) has hit the shelves in Sweden and the consumer associations are going nuts. And no wonder.

The makers adorn the packaging with slogans and descriptions such as:  "Contains beta-carotene and therefore will keep skin firm and strengthen hair".  One might as well eat some carrots.

this gum will not make you look like Cheryl Cole

Instead of wasting your dosh trying to get gum to make you beautiful, just choose some nice gum that does your teeth some good instead.  Like our friends at Peppersmith:  they do nice gum and mints that is all natural and nice.

It is all about natural beauty, you know.

Find out more about Peppersmith here - and there is a photo of Mike's old underpants too.

Peppersmith_Table_Packs_BW_WEB this gum will make you happy.  Probably.

Penguin of the week: Lance

A penguin (let's call him Lance: it's a nice name) decided to go on an adventure from his usual hot(cold) spot of Antartica and ended up in New Zealand: 2,000 miles away.

Poor Lance:  he thought he'd get picked up by the authorities for a free ride back to the South, but not so:  they're leaving him stranded.  An Emperor penguin amongst the tiny blue piddly little penguins of New Zealand, alone and warm.  What poor Lance thought was a trip away from the darkness (it's 24 hour darkness at the moment in Antartica) has ended up being his downfall.

It's a bit like grabbing one of those deals with a cheapo airline thinking you're going to Stockholm and they drop you off in Northern Sweden at a cattle shed of an airport instead.

Lance is our Penguin of the Week.  We salute you, Lance - that was quite a swim.

Scandinavian nannies / au pairs wanted (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish...)

Home
As you know we don't usually do job stuff on here for other people, but we had a chat to the ultra lovely Mary (who is our lovely Seb's better half) - and she works for a top level London agency called www.littleoneslondon.co.uk - they specialise in bilingual nannies.

At the moment, she is searching the land for amazing Scandinavian nannies and experienced au pairs - so, if you are looking to work as a nanny, mother's help or au pair in London, have a chat with Mary as she might be able to land you a super duper placement.  The main thing in short supply at the moment are child carers who can prove 3 years + of experience.

Once you have registered with Mary and the agency, she is there to help you through the maze of getting to London, give you advise, encouragement, support and help you settle into your new job.

The jobs can be both live in and live out.

Mary can be contacted on 0207 580 3113 - or ping her your Cv mary@littleoneslondon.co.uk

Need food for Midsummer parties?

We've got heaps of stuff in store now - all the usual suspects and also some new stuff.

Click HERE to see a list of most popular Swedish Midsummer goodies (easy, eh?)

Other good stuff to try:

Smoked Artic Char - it's a fish.  In Swedish we call it Röding.  We are currently selling whole smoked artic chars for just £10.95 - a truly fantastic fish and super simple to serve.  We recommend you make an easy sour cream and chive dressing (perhaps add a touch of horseradish...).  Yum.  Char is a distant cousin of salmon and trout, it has a mild salmon-like flavor and a beautiful pink color—the result of its natural diet, which includes tiny crustaceans like pink shrimp.

051101071-01-arctic-char-fish-fact_xlgKalix Lojrom - Vendace Roe - a true Swedish delicacy.  We have some in stock - it is rather pricy (hence the nickname "Swedish Beluga").  Price depends on quantity so ask us.  This is the premium catch and we have sampled and can confirm it is AMAZING.  Comes frozen (as it does...).

Midsummer 2011 - London

Midsommar in London:  Always a cause for huge celebration.  This year, it seems, lots of people are jumping on the band wagon and celebrating with the Scandi community.

If you want to jump around a pole, pretending to be a little frog... (Swedish)

- Hyde Park 12-16 on Saturday 25th is your best bet.  Great for everyone (BYO) - although if you have smaller kids, try the...

- Swedish Church Midsumer Event at Southwark Park SE16 from 15-18 on 25th June - this is a fantastic day out for kids and adults alike - very family orientated and helps support the Swedish Church in London.  Everyone more than welcome.  Bring your own picnic etc.

If you want to watch the witches burn... (Danish)

- Danish St Hans celebration on 23rd June - add your name to the list for this free event here http://www.kfuk.co.uk

- At the Danish Church in Regent's Park on 25th June at 19:00 - beers, hot dogs and pimms and a nice bonfire.  Free.

If you want to feel hot and see fires... (Finnish)

The Finnish Church is hosting a day event on 25th from 16-19 with sauna, food and drinks.  No food and drink in the sauna, silly.  If you want to run around naked in a rye field, as is tradition, we recommend you don't do it in London.  it's just not done.  NO, the Tesco car park down the road is NOT a rye field.  So, please don't run around naked in the Tesco car park, they don't like it. Thanks.

A night on the town for the younger crowd... (Boogie)

...as in, those over 18.

Club Okend is hosting a night at Bonds in Kingly Street

We hear rumours there is something Scandi going on at Amika... Fancy that, eh?

If you want to buy Scandinavian food for the day's celebration - try us.  We're on 61 Great Titchfield Street.

Seb's long lost cousin makes macaroni and bacon

This could be Seb's cousin, we think.  We *heart* him.  He's so Swedish.

Man versus Moose

We stumbled upon this Swedish clip of a man defending himself from a moose.  Now, at the best of times, these animals are rather scary (and built like armoured tanks, pretty much) - but we wondered (without taking any of this man's bravary away, because it's definitely a rather brace thing he did) if anyone could confirm this is a moose calf or not?

It's all in the moves, baby...

We know we have posted this before, but it IS good.  Learn dancing by the Finns.  They know how to do it.

Hungry by innocent drinks

Inno2

Back in her youth, many moons ago, Bronte spent most of her days at a place called innocent drinks.  There was grass on the floor and as many smoothies as you could drink.  A wonderful, amazing and inspirational place of work - with a bunch of the most inspirational and amazing people ever.

Last week innocent's new book "Hungry" was published and it contains one of Bronte's recipes - the same recipe we use at Scandi Kitchen today.  This recipe was born while Bronte was still at innocent drinks and used to bring cake into Fruit Towers on Friday afternoons (because 'we all like a bit of cake on a Friday.')

With photos by the amazing photographer Clare Shiland and words by the super wonderful Ceri, this is a lovely, lovely book that deserves to be in your kitchen.
