Waffle Day 25th March - 'Våffeldagen'

Vaffel21

Waffle Day (25th March) began in Sweden as Våffeldagen, allegedly due to confusion between the Swedish “vårfrudagen” meaning “Our Lady’s Day” which falls on the same date. The day historically marks the beginning of spring and is celebrated by the eating of many, many waffles.

Nordic waffles are made in a special heart-shape waffle iron. The waffles are sweet and soft – and best eaten straight out of the iron, with jam and whipped cream. Or brown cheese, if you are Norwegian.

Pop by all day Tuesday 25th for waffles at the café.  Get any coffee and a waffle for a fiver - available all day.

Or make some waffles at home - here's a recipe that our Marte uses. There are as many recipes as there are families in Scandinavia - this is the one we use at ScandiKitchen.

If you don't have a waffle maker, you can buy them on Amazon and ebay.

Show us your big, fat buns and WIN Lunch for Two at ScandiKitchen

Fettisdagen2014

It's Fat Tuesday on Tuesday 4th March 2014 - also known as Fettisdagen, fastelavn, Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras.

On this day across Scandinavia we celebrate the start of Lent. The faste is not observed that often anymore, however, the tradition of stuffing ourselves with cream buns the day before Ash Wednesday still prevails.

In Sweden, these buns are known as Semlor (plural of the word 'Semla'). They are yeast buns flavoured with cardamon, baked and then stuffed with marzipan and whipped cream.

Semlor are only served around this time of year.  Once Lent is in full swing, the buns are not baked again until the following year - it really is a huge seasonal tradition and you should definitely make sure you get your hands on one of these buns before the season is over.

We bake and serve these at the cafe - however, it is not hard ot make your own.  You can find the recipe right HERE.

WE WANT TO SEE YOUR BIG BUNS: Your own creations and variations.  Send us a snapshot of your Fat Tuesday buns and we'll post the pictures online - and we'll pick a winner who gets Lunch for Two People at the cafe in London (if you live too far away, we'll send you a voucher for the webshop instead).

Mail your photos to iloveherring@scandikitchen.co.uk before 4th March 2014. Usual competition rules apply.

First entry - from Isabelle in Brighton who made her first ever batch of Semlor, having never tasted them before. Verdict: "Amazing - and my flatmate had 3 of them, I'm not sure how she managed!".

WIN: 'The Almost Nearly Perfect People' - by Michael Booth

9780224089623

Did you read the article that got everybody talking a few weeks back? (if not, read it HERE) Are we Nordics not all we're cracked up to be? Who decided to put us on a pedestal in the first place and how do we get down from there without ruining everything? Are we really obsessed with Midsomer Murders? (Ed: Yes).

Michael Booth, writer and journalist, currently living in Denmark (and, we can vouch, speak Danish pretty well) is not sure all is as it is cracked up to be. Well, actually, that is if you only read the article (so don't be offended just yet). In the book, you see, Booth goes deeper into the psyche of what makes us Scandinavians special and finds that, in fact, we might just be almost perfect...

Confused? Don't be. It's a good book and it is worth a read. You can buy it here

We've got a copy of the book to give away - fancy being in with a chance of winning it?

Just answer this easy question:

The statue of the Little Mermaid is in which Nordic town:

a) Stockholm

b) Copenhagen

c) Skagen

Answers by e-mail, please, to iloveherring@scandikitchen.co.uk before Monday at noon (17/2). Winner will be drawn at random from correct entries. No cheating, no cash alternative, no non-sense and all usual terms apply.

This month belongs to the brilliant illustrator Åsa Wikman.

You can see more of Åsa's work here

See her lovely display at the cafe all of January.

Do you fancy being having your art work displayed at ScandiKitchen? Here's your chance.  Each month we pick a new artist to decorate our wall.

We have a few rules, though:

- The art work comes to us frame and ready to hang, ideally no larger than 40 x 80.  We can accommodate up to 4 paintings or frames.

- The work MUST be either by a Scandi artist or photographer OR someone depicting Scandinavia.

- The write up about the artist has to be no larger than A5 - we can add this on the wall next to the frames

- We will not sell or be responsible for any sales of the art work - all comms about the art work will need to be on the A5 note including contact details

- When the 1 months is up, the artist is responsible to picking up the art work again

- We accept no responsibility for damage etc to any works - we will do out best to keep things nice, but the items are hung here on owners responsibility.

- No moving of nails or hooks - we have only what we have here and can't start moving nails around

- Please, no frames that are massively heavy, it is just a basic wall.

Other than that, it is up to you.

To be considered for February's Art Person, send some suggestiosn of your work to bronte@scandikitchen.co.uk.

We'll let you know by mid January if you're the chosen one.

Are you wearing underpants?

Pants

Chances are, you probably are wearing a pair of underpants right now. Comfortable, much?

One of our good, good friends is supporting a really great cause in West London called The Shelter Project. Here, they run a shelter for the homeless gentlemen - which is especially needed during these cold winter months.

It is great when people donate clothes - they can wash and recycle and use this and there are a lot of people on the streets who needs warm clothes in the cold months. One thing, however, is that people - for quite obvious reasons - don't tend to donate [worn] underpants.

This means that The Shelter Project has a shortage of underpants. The most important garment, we'd quite agree.

So, we want to help The Shelter Project get hold of men's underpants. Can you help? Did you get some underpants in your Secret Santa that didn't quite fit your style? Are you passing by Primark or H&M and fancy donating a pair of men's underpants or two?

Ever pair of underpants count. They don't have to be fancy, they just have to be new and unworn.

You can drop your pants (see what we did there?) by POST to The Shelter Project (c/o Helle Kaiser-Nielsen 11 Geraldine Road, London W4 3PA) - or at ScandiKitchen Cafe on Great Titchfield Street and we'll pass on the pants.  Please make sure you wrap and label your pants before dropping them off at the cafe.

What a great excuse to say to your colleagues: "I'm just nipping out for a coffee and to drop off my underpants". Not many chances in life to use that sentence.

Thanks for your support.

We're 6 years old. Yes, really. Happy Birthday to us.

It started off as a chat over a glass of wine. Or four. It became an idea, a passion. 'Let's open a deli' we said. Then we chucked in our day jobs and made it happen.

Six years ago Jonas & Bronte opened the doors to ScandiKitchen for the first time. Since then, we've grown from being a team of a few to teams of many and we now have a big Warehouse (called 'StockHome') and a web shop and we have a wholesales team too.

We're so very proud to be here and to be able to serve our daily Smorgasbord of open sandwiches and supply the Scandi community and scandophiles with Nordic foods.  We love what we do and we love you for supporting us and continuing to help make it all happen.

Pop by on Wednesday for a piece of cake or something. We're gonna celebrate. Feel free to sing Happy Birthday if you feel like it.

Here are some photos from the old days - the days just before we opened and the day after.  Did you know we opened our doors and had a baby the same day? Yes - Jonas and Bronte's daughter Astrid will also be turning six years old. She'd hoping for a One Direction poster, a purple pony and a really fancy colouring book.

Lots of Scandi Love

WIN tickets to see Doktor Glas in London

DrGlass

Doktor Glas, the great play by Hjalmer Söderberg, is coming to London's West End in April and May 2013.

Krister Henriksson, who is best known as Wallander in Henning Mankell’s widely praised Swedish TV series is making his West End debut in Doktor Glas, which transfers to London following its acclaimed run in Sweden.

Doktor Glas tells the story of a 19th century physician who falls madly in love with the beautiful young wife of a corrupt clergyman. When she confides in him that her marriage is making her miserable, he agrees to help in whatever way he can. Soon Doktor Glas finds himself torn between his passion and his morality, and drives the play towards its shocking climax.

Doktor Glas will run at Wyndhams Theatre, a Delfont Macintosh Theatre, from 16 April to 11 May 2013.

We've got a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky winner.  These tickets will be valid on 16th April until 21st April (excluding the 18th), so you need to be available to go on one of those days.

Whey too hot? Brown cheese on fire.

Buy brown cheese here

NEWS FLASH – Giant Goats cheese fire in Norway

In Northern Norway, 27 tonnes of brown cheese caught fire and burnt in a tunnel for five days, reports are saying. Officials say that smouldering toxic gases have been slowing the recovery operation.

The amazing Norwegian goats cheese – also known as Brunost - has a high sugar content because the milk sugars have been allowed to caramelize (hence the lovely colour) – and will simply keep on burning once it is on fire.

And 27 tonnes? That’s a lot of brown cheese. On fire. On a truck. In a tunnel.

Kjell Bjoern Vinje, of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, said it was the first time he could remember cheese catching fire on Norwegian roads: "I didn't know that brown cheese burns so well," he said.

In case of shortages, get hold of your Norwegian Brown Cheese here in our online store. We also have plenty of stock in the café shop.

A lovely evening with Trine, Signe, Emma and Patrick

2012-11-15 11.45.01

We had a lovely evening of book signing yesterday at Scandi Kitchen.  Lots of mulled wine, great chat and nice biscuits. Bronte drank too much mulled wine and lit up the whole place with her beacon red ears.

Trine Hahnemann was there, advising on cooking traditonal Scandinavian Christmas food.  Signe 'Scandilicious' Johansen mingled and advised on baking.

The lovely Emma Kennedy showed us all her knitted Sarah Lund doll - and we all got so envious that we're planning to learn how to knit our own.  Patrick Kingsley of the Guardian shared his tips on How to Be Danish.

Thanks to you all for turning up and for being part of it - and thank you most of all to our great authors for being there and signing many, many books.

You can buy all the books here

If you want signed copies, you can also pop by the cafe on Great Titchfield Street

Danish school in London / Dansk Skole i London

There's a lot of talk about setting up a Danish school in London and we're happy to pass on the info in case others are interested in taking part in this.  If you are interested in hearing more about this Danish School you shoudl attend the meeting on 26th June - read on for details.

The school is modelled on the New Model School concept (google Maple Walk for a good example of such a school) - and it will follow the Danish curriculum.  It is fee paying, but minimum fees and non profit.

If you are interested in attending the first meeting about this school, you can sign up by e-mailing dendanskeskole@hotmail.co.uk.

Here's all the info you need - direct from the people who are working on setting this school up:

Invitation

We would like to invite you to the inaugural meeting for the Danish School in London

The meeting will take place at 7.30 on the 26th of June at the Danish YMCA:

Dansk KFUK
43 Maresfield Gardens
London NW3 5TF

Who are we?

·Eva Lunderskov Papesch, Danish born Doctor, permanently based in the South East for the last 10 years, has lived in London for a total of 14 years.

·Michael Papesch, New Zealand born Doctor, permanently based in London for the last 16 years

·We are married and have two bilingual children. We are missing a bilingual fulltime primary and secondary education option in London and are passionate about making our vision of a Danish-English school a reality

Rationale: Why do we need this school?

·We conducted a survey of parents of 150 Danish children who are predominantly permanently based in London. The results of a survey of the Danish community in the southeast of England, showed an overwhelming interest for the establishment of a school with a Danish Ethos

·This is not a business venture, we are doing this because we have a vision to provide fulltime bilingual education to Danish speaking children in London

Meeting agenda

· Presentation of our initial proposal of a bilingual Danish/English fulltime Primary and Secondary school in North London

· Appointment of a start up group assisting with the next steps of the process, including fundraising, networking, legal and business input

Tid: 26. Juni 2012 kl 19.30

Sted:     Dansk KFUK
              43 Maresfield Gardens
              London NW3 5TF

Sprog: Der vil blive talt dansk og engelsk

Svar udbedes.

Skole model

17 Mai 2012 - Norwegian National Day London

Krndef-norge17mai

Think St Patrick’s Day is cool?  Then you’ll also enjoy Norwegian National Day, except everything is blue, red and white instead.  Oh, and less Guinness.  Possibly a bit more aquavit instead.  And waffles.

Norwegian constitution day is celebrated on 17th May every year and Norwegians across the world come out of the wood work, adorn their national costumes and get together to celebrate.

In London, these celebrations take place all over – but start in Southwark Park at 9:00 with the hoisting of the Norwegian flag.  There’s dancing, there’s music, there’s hotdogs and there are sure to be an abundance of waffles with or without brown cheese.

You can find the whole programme for 17th May (17. Mai i London 2012) right here

At our Great Titchfield Store we’ll be celebrating Norway too – with flags, cakes and tasters – so pop on down to see us.

We’re expecting our full Norway National Day delivery on 10th May so that is when you need to get ordering via our online shop www.scandikitchen.co.uk/shop to ensure your stash in time for the celebrations.

FRIA Gluten Free bread wins Best BREAD category

Fria 2

We love Fria.  They make amazing bread.  That it is gluen free (and mostly dairy free) is a bonus.

A few weeks back FRIA won the category for Best Bread at the Free From awards.  This is a big deal.

If you are gluten intolerent and you want to eat bread that taste like real bread but contains no gluten, then get yourself down to our shop and pick up some Fria.

You will find it in the Freezer section.  Along with Fria chocolate cake, Fria cinnamon buns and muffins.  Yes, all gluten free.

The product that won the awards is the Fria Wholemeal loaf - it is gluten free, dairy free, nut free and egg free.  And it tastes amazing.

Scary Norway tow-truck fall. Shudder.

This footage reminds us just how dangerous the roads in Norway are.  Note the driver of the tow truck's amazing escape (sadly the driver of the actual truck had to go to hospital, but his condition is said to be stable).

Shudder.

A Sarah Lund jumper for Camilla

Camilla and Charles are visiting Denmark - and they made a wee trip out to see Sarah Lund and crew (currently filming series 3 of The Killing).

Guess who got a real Sarah Lund  jumper?  Oh yes.  Camilla did.  Doesn't she look happy?

The lady on the right is the Danish Crown Princess Mary.  She's got 31 jumpers already so she didn't get any.  Probably.

How Norwegian Labour MPs spend their spare time...

Jette

....starring in music videos.

Labour MP Jette F. Christensen from Norway is one of the stars of this new music video called "Big Girls".

We think Ms Widdecombe or Ms Harman should take a leaf out of Jette's book and star in the new One Direction video.

If you've got it, flaunt it, we say.
