Best hockey goal?

This player is the nost talked about hockey dude in the Us at the moment.  Oliver Wahlstrom is from Portland, Maine - and is the son of a professinal Swedish hockey player (go figure!).  Oliver is only 9 years old.  Now watch this kid in action

Looking for a Norwegian, a Finn and a Swede...

We've had a call from the Brazillian Tourist Office in Wells street (near Scandi Kitchen) who are doing lots of events in Scandinavia in November and they are looking for one person from each country to come help them do a bit of work for this over the next few weeks in helping promote these events.

The job pays £10 an hour and it is for around 2 hours a day (mornings) for the next few weeks.  If you speak Swedish, Norwegian or Finnish fluently, do get in touch as soon as possible - contact details below.

'Anden' is coming to London - win tickets

Anders Matthesen, the Danish comedian, is in London on 11th November and is playing at Conway Hall.  Tickets are £25 each and can be bought through KFUK

We've got a pair of tickets to give away for the event - to enter the competition answer this question:

It's probably worth mentioning here that "Anden" is going to perform in Danish.

Winner will be chosen by usual method:  entries are in a sock, box or maybe Timmo's apron pocket and we'll draw a winner from all correct (or most humourous) entries.

KIDSEN Scandinavian kids shop launch party

Wow, what a party.  We did the canapes for the official launch of the new Scandinavian kids store in Kensal Rise (just outside the station on 111 Chamberlaine Road).  It was so much fun and there were about a hundred people in the store. 

Here are some pictures from the evening - do pop by there to stock up on your Scandinavian brands: they do anything from all the Pippi Longstocking stuff to the new BRIO pram / buggy and all the really cool Scandinavian kids clothes brands such as Lille Barn, Ida, Mini a Ture, Flawless and many more.

The London Cookbook

We love Jenny Linford - she wrote a book years ago called the Food Lovers London and it was whilst reading this that Bronte and Jonas decided to open a Scandinavian Deli.  Awwwww....

Jenny has now written a new book and this time it is a cookbook with recipes from lots of great delis and smaller cafes in London.  Guess what?  We've got a copy to give away.  And not only a copy, but a signed copy - Jenny is popping by to have a cup of coffee during the week and she'll sign it.  So if you win it and want it to be dedicated to your Aunt Agneta in Uppsala, then she might do that (we'll ask, but no guarentee)

Want low carbon footprint? Move to Samso in Denmark...

We love Samso - a little island just west of Sealand in Denmark.  They have, thanks to a Danish energy project, got zero carbon footprint - and on top of that they produce the finest potatoes in the land (at least according to Bronte's mum).

Win tickets for EUROBEAT - the muscial

Many of us Scandinavians long for that time of year when Eurovision comes round and we get to vote for our neighbours.  Sadly, it's only once a year - and some of us struggle to find stuff to do the rest of the time. 

Enter EUROBEAT - the musical.  The story goes that an Australian man was so dissapointed he was not allowed to enter, so he wrote this musical instead.  Basically, Les Dennis and Mel Giedroyc (of Mel&Sue fame) present a mock Eurovision contest and you even get to vote afterward, meaning no two shows are ever the same.  The show is on at the Novello theatre from 4th September till 15th November and has got great reviews all round.

Celebrated in style

Henrik Rock Star

Our first birthday was celebrated in style at Scandi Kitchen.  We served nice herring and even nicer lagkage (layer cake) all day to ayone who fancied it and we even had a little soiree in the evening for some close friends from the hood and around.

The best bits from our birthday were:

• All the nice flowers and cards we got - thank you to everyone who brightened up our day, we love them
• Knowing we have lots of friends
• A few of you feeling the warmth afte a few aquavits in the evening - we liked the dancing.  And hugging.
• Jonas sticking his whole face in one of the lagkager

About 700 canapes were eaten at our little party - these are the crayfish and coriander tunnbrod rolls - very popular indeed.

It's our birthday - we are ONE on 10th July

We can hardly believe it ourselves:  it's been a year already.  A year of lots of excellent Monmouth coffee, a serious amount of herring and quite a few open sandwiches.   

Stuff we've achieved since opening on 10th July 2007:

• Had a baby (well, the owners Jonas and Bronte have anyway...Astrid will be a year old on the 11th July... she arrived 21 hours after the shop did)
• Grown three moustaches (Henrik, Jonas and Seb) and removed one (Seb)
• Tried to be funny in 52 newsletters (phew...)
• Served enough coffee that if you stacked all the mugs on top of each other they'd reach the top of the London Eye over 7 times
• Realised that curry herring really is the new black
• Henrik's worn out 3 pairs of shoes running around the store
• Sebastian's learnt 119 words in Danish (at least)

Much more has happened, we're sure - it's been a very eventful year.  Thanks to all of you guys for your support, we've had such a blast and we can't wait to get stuck into year two.

SCAN magazine - out on Monday

We love it when a plan comes together.  Not that we've been much involved in the planning, mind you, but we do like people who work towards getting Scandinavians together - and who also work towards teaching people about Scandinavia.

On Monday, a new magazine will come out - it's called SCAN Magazine.  We'll be giving away copies in the shop, so pop by to get yours.

SCAN magazine will have interviews with the more famous ones of us, articles about Scandinavian food in London (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian...), stuff about Scandinavian design, places to go, what to do and maybe even a bit about what to wear.

Jeg er også dansker...

The Danish newspaper Politiken are doing a campaign for integration into Danish society.  This basically involves Danish people from different backgrounds wearing t-shirts printed with the sentence "Jeg er ogsaa dansker", meaning "I'm also Danish".  The sentiment of the campaign is good, although we're not yet convinced the way of doing it is quite the right way - but that is a different story all together.  Never the less, we like to support such initiatives - and the Danes here at SK would just like to add for the record that "we're also Danish, even though we live abroad.

Our famous Sebastian

Yes, in case you were wondering, it was indeed our Sebastian appearing on the Graham Norton show this week.  We're in awe of him - it takes quite some guts to go on national TV, let along singing Herreys songs in front of Graham Norton himself (and half of Britain).  Sebastian, we salute you - you can sing Diggiloo Diggeley for us anytime.
